 What's on the site

Our initial postings are student work from the Fifties (AA) and Seventies (AAG). Later, newspaper and yearbook scans will appear for reunion classes. Faculty photos with tenure information are planned. Catalogs and other pamphlets appear as they are requested by patrons. And there will be occasional items of special interest.

 How to find it

The links in the right panel will open the various item categories.

 Recent Inquiries

A patron, who is also a retired professor of mathematics, is doing research on family members who attended the schools in the 1840s and 1850s. She followed up on the mathematics curriculum offered at The Albany Academy in 1855-56 and kindly sent these links relating to one of the authors and his works, giving us a glimpse of studies at AA 150 years ago.

A calculus text by Charles Davies

"Davies was one of the most prolific and successful authors of educational books in America. He wrote mathematics text-books for grammar school, high school and college education."  More on Davies

Frank L. Frost, AA Class of 1886, went on to found the Albany Association of the Blind, now Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany. The Association will observe its centennial next year and its Director of Marketing and Special Events will be doing some research in the Archives on Frank. He had an illustrious career at AA, including valedictorian, cadet captain of Company A, and Editor-in-chief of the Cue. In fact, he was a founding editor of the Academy literary magazine in 1885 with Cuyler Reynolds. The Cue appeared four times that year and nine times when Frost was a senior.

A professor of Humanities and Fine Arts at Illinois Valley Community College is writing a book on military schools and military programs in academies in the United States from the Civil War period, particularly to note the exigencies of their progress. The Albany Academy Cadet Battalion, founded in 1870, is of particular interest to him.

Bob Hirsh, AA Class of 1965, inquires if anyone has made an effort to identify all the boys who sang with the Militaires, Privataires, etc., and how many have gone on to be active members of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS, formerly SPEBSQSA). This would be a great project for a chorister, past or present.
